The MLAC (Mindfulness, Love and Compassion) Institute for Psychosocial Services Inc. has tips for parenting in the 21st century, discussed in-depth during the first Parenting Academy on Feb. 7 at St. Luke’s Medical City in Bonifacio Global City.
1) When you say “don’t,” give the “do.” Provide an alternative mode of thinking. The child will grow up thinking of solutions to problems. (Don’t jump on the bed. Jump on the floor.)
2) Criticize the behavior, not the person or pagkatao.
3) Be brief and clear.
4) Be sure (have confidence in your tone of voice).
5) Balance “no” with “yes.” (Don’t just correct the “wrong” behavior. Affirm the “right” behavior.)
6) Be fair. Don’t play favorites.
7) Have reasonable, realistic rules.
8) Provide appropriate consequences (reward and punishment).
9) Parents, do not undermine each other.
10) Enjoy your child/children. Have fun times with them. Not every encounter is teaching time.
11) Get to know your children as unique persons. They have different temperaments, talents and personalities. Accept and appreciate each one for who they are.
12) Children from ages 3 to 40 need to know that their parents are proud of them.
