Artists Pinggot Zulueta and Demosthenes Campos explore the power of lines in their inimitable styles in “Aligned,” which opens May 26 at Kaida Contemporary in Quezon City.
“When we saw our previous artworks, we immediately thought that we have a certain connection (and we should) start to explore using lines in our pieces,” Zulueta said. “So we decided to do an exhibit and incorporate lines.”
Unlike many artists who have been doing two-man shows, Zulueta and Campos preferred to work independently. They decided not to update each other regarding their works for the exhibition.
Zulueta said the process allowed them more freedom as artists while preparing their audience for a surprise.
“Artists who do group shows usually check the works of the other participating artists, and we did not want to do that,” Zulueta said. “We didn’t want to compare and ask questions, which made it more exciting for us.”
Connections
Aside from lines, the two artists tackle the concept of freedom and unpredictability in their works.
In “Aligned,” Campos focuses on the use of ropes. He plays with it to produce vertical, horizontal and broken lines but juxtaposed with issues of artistic and personal struggles.
Previous works of Campos were very vibrant and full of texture. However, in this show, he experiments with minimal elements.
“I take this move as something personal,” Campos said. “I would like to believe that I am an artist who enjoys his freedom.”
Like Campos, Zulueta said he was also trying out a different visual style.
“My pieces in ’Aligned’ is a continuation of using lines as a major factor in my works,” Zulueta said. “But I also explored and used different techniques and incorporated other objects such as dominoes and letters.”
Zulueta will be presenting abstract, collage and assemblage works. Before focusing on abstraction and painting, he was into cartooning and photography.
Show will run until June 9. Kaida Contemporary is at 45 Scout Madriñan St., South Triangle, Quezon City. Call 709 0289; e-mail [email protected].
