Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach remained firm on her stance regarding the enduring friendship between the Philippines and the United States, saying that most Filipinos are very “pro-American.”
Answering a question during the Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) on Saturday, Wurtzbach said that only 1 percent of Filipinos are anti-Americans.
A Reddit user asked the Filipina beauty icon the question: “What is your personal thought on American culture opposed to anywhere else?”
To which she replied: “In the Philippines, it’s very Americanized. If you go to the Philippines, compared to the other neighboring Asian countries, on TV we have American series, TV shows, the movies as well. Almost everybody speaks English. We’re very pro-American, I would say almost everybody. I daresay 1% — and I’m sure the nerds are going to correct me on this but — I’d say just about 1% are not pro-American. Most Filipinos are pro-American, and so am I!”
Wurtzbach earned the ire of militant lawmakers and groups when she said during the Miss Universe pageant that “she doesn’t see any problem” if the Philippines will facilitate the reopening of American military bases.
During her grand homecoming press conference last month, she clarified that US military presence could mean aid and support for the country.
The beauty queen’s pro-American stance is not unfounded, however.
A Pew Research Center report in 2015 said that among all Asian nationalities, Filipinos have the most favorable view regarding the US at 92 percent. AJH/JE
