CONTEMPORARY painter Carlo Angelo Saavedra continues to paint works that make images both appear and dissolve at the same instance.

For his upcoming solo show, “In the Blink of an Eye,” at Art Underground, the painter experiments with the transience of image, making each work appear whole only in the temporariness of painterly strokes.

Curated with variations of lighting, the works are illuminated to create instances of momentary gesture and virtually make Saavedra’s quick, fiery, complex brushwork come alive.

The show is an index of how, in the presence of flickering light as devices, the culture of perception and the way we see are now redefined by the speed of the eye.

Saavedra’s works resist the trajectory of a fully defined figure even as these arrest the tendency to go into full abstraction. Thus, each painting is rich in playfulness, critique and indulgence of material: all enjoyed in the moment of a glance, in the suddenness of gaze.

“In the Blink of an Eye” is curated by Riel Hilario and opens on May 28. It runs until June 25 at Art Underground, 814 Balagtas St., Addition Hills, Mandaluyong City. Call 7210745, 0917-5237463 or 0917-8172902.
