Supergirl” and “Legends of Tomorrow” are taking flight once again after wildly successful first seasons. The sophomore superheroes are settling nicely into the growing DC television lineup that includes “Flash” and “Arrow.”
Most of the characters on these shows were pretty obscure by most standards, but producer Greg Berlanti has created epic stories around them, and it’s full steam ahead.
“Legends of Tomorrow” features a team of reluctant heroes thrown together to stop villains from destroying history as we know it. While the team has defeated a great enemy and managed not to kill each other in the process, not all is well with time. They are now the only ones who can save it.
Still on the time-traveling ship are former Time Master Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill), resurrected assassin White Canary (Caity Lotz), criminal arsonist Mick Rory (Dominic Purcell), genius scientist Ray Palmer aka The Atom (Brandon Routh), and Firestorm duo Martin Stein (Victor Garber) and Jefferson Jackson (Franz Drameh).
While the Legends accomplished their mission at significant cost, they can look forward to two new members joining their ranks. The season premiere introduces Dr. Nathan Heywood (Nick Zano) as a historian who helps the heroes uncover problems in time that need their attention. The team will also welcome Vixen (Maisie Richardson-Sellers), who channels amazing animal powers.
Girl power
Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) is a shy executive assistant who hides her powers from the world until a near disaster forces her to reveal herself.
Now, she is also Supergirl: the heroine of National City. She battles threats to the city with her sister Alex (Chyler Leigh) and the government’s Department of Extranormal Operations. She also happens to be cousin to the Man of Steel, Superman (Tyler Hoechlin).
In the first season, Superman appeared only in the distance or on phone messages. Now he will be appearing in person to help her out. After a first season that saw Supergirl thrown into her superhero role and figuring out who she can and cannot trust, she will get some much-needed guidance from Superman on living a dual life.
Even with Superman’s formidable presence, the story still revolves around Kara. He’s there to help her, not the other way around.
One thing to be said about this Superman—he comes with some baggage which is only hinted at, but at least he’s not walking around with a gloomy, dark cloud above his head. That’s Batman’s job.
Worlds collide
The new seasons are off to a quick start, and are clearly in no rush to answer any questions left hanging from the previous ones. What becomes evident is that their actions will have an impact on the larger universe.
The first episodes introduce at least five new characters, and limitless options.
Fans have much to be excited about, now that characters from all four DC shows will cross paths. There is much guessing online about how this will happen, but the excitement is palpable with the superhero fight club video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxX_fTfqN28) already past a million views.
The stars themselves are excited about the new directions of these shows, and have as much chemistry off screen as they do onscreen.
We were invited to the set of these two shows to chat with the cast and crew, so stay tuned for our interviews at the end of the month.
