Is the Lomo camera for you? | Lifestyle.INQ

OCTOBER 27, 2022

When using a film camera, there’s no safety net, no delete button. You have to consider the settings and commit to the subject of your photo. Therefore, you must think before you click.

There’s a certain level of trust when a finger presses the shutter button of a film camera, commanding its entirety to compose a well-thought out photo. You’ve done your part, now all you can do is hope your picture looks fine.

With today’s tech-forward optical gadgets, most people would probably never go back to using cameras of the past. But, surprisingly, millennials are embracing the world of film cameras. Whether for aesthetics or just the thrill of waiting to see what you shot, the quirky vintage film camera is one of the interests of the youth.

In recent years, Lomography (defined in its website as “a globally active organization dedicated to analogue, experimental and creative photography”) has ushered in the comeback of classic analogue cameras.

One of the latest in its lineup of products is the Lomo’Instant, a handy yet advanced instant camera with functions not found in other cameras of its caliber. It uses Fujifilm Instax mini film, which is easy to find around the metro and cheaper than other film rolls.

What is it about the Lomo’Instant that makes it such a cool camera? Let’s start with its looks: every time I use it, it never fails to fascinate people with its boxy, old-school design. Definitely a conversation starter.

It’s also lightweight, with provisions for straps and a tripod.

As for its user-friendliness: At first I had trouble placing the four AA batteries (sold separately), which had to be loaded one on top of the other. But as soon as I figured it out, I found the camera very easy to use. Simply load the Instax Fujifilm mini film at the back, turn it on, pull the lever to release the plastic protection, and you’re ready to take 10 shots.

The zoom and focus adjustment lever is found at the right side of the camera, and color gels can be slipped through a slot in the built-in flash.

Exposure can also be adjusted from -2 to +2. Under the camera are adjustments for “flash,” “no flash” and “long exposure.”

Drawbacks

As for the drawbacks: At first I thought the Lomo’Instant was as easy to operate as my Fujifilm Instax. Though the photos develop instantly, after experimenting with five shots, I realized that the more settings make things more complex.

Since the photos can be unpredictable, I became more discerning about what I shoot. Instax Film isn’t cheap and you could finish 10 shots in under 30 minutes.

If you’re into photography and want a different quality and look to your images, invest in a Lomo’Instant. It teaches you patience and determination. —CONTRIBUTED
