We’ve all procrastinated at one point in our lives. In fact, I bet you’re procrastinating right now. And I bet you’re hating yourself for it. For a while now, procrastinating has been both glorified and condemned as an illness, a psychological disorder, and a potentially beneficial thing. Well, while you’re busy actively wasting your time, how about we take this opportunity to shed some light on exactly what kind of time-waster you are.

Yes, you can now get a quick diagnosis of what kind of procrastinator you are through a flowchart made by a guy with a legitimate Ph.D.

According to this flowchart made with information from Joseph Ferrari, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at De Paul University in Chicago, there are three types of procrastinators based on their motives.

The three different types of procrastinators are as follows:

 

The Thrill-seeker (or the last-minute procrastinator)

The thrill-seeker procrastinates because they believe they produce their best work due to the adrenaline of working last minute.

Tips from Ferrari: “Constantly set and adjust deadlines so that you still get the adrenaline rush, but are using our time more effectively than procrastinating.”

 

The Avoider (or the fear procrastinator)

The Avoider delays dealing with their task because of fear, either of success or failure. They just want to avoid the results of their action as much as possible.

Tips from Ferrari: “Success is a good thing and nothing to be ashamed of. Failure is a way to learn and improve. Focus on doing the best job you can do and not what others think.”

 

The Indecisive (or the decisional procrastinator)

The Indecisive are identified as perfectionists who try to shift the responsibility from themselves, and that’s why they distract themselves with other tasks as much as possible.

Tips from Ferrari: “Not everything has to be perfect so try to take risks and use your intuition. Mistakes may mean you learn something new. Try to split the task up into more manageable parts.“
