LOOK: Bento box at P5000 is worth every cent

People often think bento boxes only refer to homemade meals with “kawaii” (cute) designs, but there exists in Japan high-end versions of the popular packed meal, one of which costs almost P5,000, and rightfully so.

In the basement of Tokyo Station which is the adjacent branch of Daimaru, a popular department store, one will find Meat Yazawa, a bento takeout shop of the restaurant with the same name. It’s this takeout shop which offers the luxurious bento boxes, as reported by SoraNews24 last Saturday, July 7.

Far from the usual price of takeout bento boxes usually under P500, Meat Yazawa offers fancy packed meals with the lowest priced at around P860.

Their priciest bento box to date, called Kiwami (“Perfect Deliciousness”) Bento, costs around 10,000 yen (about P5,000), a far cry from the cheapest packed meal bento one can buy at convenience stores, the report explained. However, the price is arguably right for the bento’s contents.

Perfect Deliciousness boasts of the following: a sliced chateaubriand Gunma wagyu A5-rank steak, a sliced sirloin Gunma wagyu A5-rank steak, a Kuroge wagyu hamburger steak, rice, and a vegetable mix of broccoli, carrots, corn and pickles.

Considering the huge amount of premium beef that this bento box contains, its expensiveness is no surprise. However, more than the quality of the beef used, the pricey packed meal promises a fantastic gastronomic experience.

Contrary to what one would think, given the available premium beef to choose from in the bento, eating the bento box’s contents didn’t induce a feeling  of gastronomic saturation, the report noted. Adding Meat Yazawa’s special sauce to the Kuroge wagyu hamburger steak, for example, made the meal even better. Kate Matriano/JB
