Kathryn Bernardo launches her collab with Happy Skin and here's a look at the complete collection | Lifestyle.INQ

OCTOBER 27, 2022

“It’s always been my dream to have my own makeup line,” said Kathryn Bernardo.

That dream came true when she collaborated with homegrown brand Happy Skin Cosmetics.

“We always wanted to work with Kath,” said Happy Skin co-founder Rissa Mananquil-Trillo. “Working with her has been such a revelation. No wonder she’s so loved by her fans.”

Happy Skin co-founder Jacqe Yuengtian-Gutierrez said, “She was a Happy Skin user even before. We really wanted to tap her because she really believed in the power of the product.”

It was Kathryn’s makeup artist Denise Go-Ochoa who first introduced her to Happy Skin. Denise would use Happy Skin products on Kath, who has sensitive skin. “Ate Denise was part of their Glam Squad collection and because of her, I got to know the brand. Hiyang siya sa akin,” said Kathryn. Soon, other women in her family were also using the brand.

Denise inspired Kath’s love for makeup. “Ate Denise has been my makeup artist for years. I’m very kikay, especially nung bata ako. It was my dream to become a makeup artist someday, ‘pag hindi na ako artista.”

And then there’s the other dream: her own makeup line. Kathryn worked with Happy Skin to create the inaugural Generation Happy Skin collection.

Rissa said, “First meeting pa lang, she already knew what she wanted and what she didn’t like. She was really hands-on, she was very diligent in testing the products. The six pieces we chose—the powder, blush, mascara, brow pen, matte lipstick and lip and cheek tints—were all based on her makeup routine. We’d go, ‘What about liquid foundation?’ And she’d say ‘No eh, I just use powder.’ She’s honest and I find that refreshing. She’s authentic.”

“This is all me,” Kathryn said. “Everything. From the packaging, the colors—my fans know I love pastels so much—the font, the names, the shades, lahat. I want them to see me in the collection. I was super involved in developing, creating and testing the products. I really enjoyed the process. The Happy Skin team allowed me to be very collaborative with them.”

Rissa said, “Kath is a reminder of what really matters, values like love, courage, freedom, authenticity, spunk, moxie… She chose those as the shade names because she wanted na every time you swipe on that lippie or put on that product, you remind yourself of what really matters. I really love how there’s a message in each product.”

The result is a collection that Kath describes as “must-have makeup products you need every day,” essentials you can use to create Kath’s favorite no-makeup makeup look.

Kath and the Happy Skin team made sure that the products look good on all skin tones—including morena girls like Kath. “It’s perfect for us Pinay girls,” Kath said.

According to Rissa, Generation Happy Skin, Happy Skin Cosmetics’ diffusion line, “is minimalist, even the product names are very straightforward. It’s very direct. It really embraces a new breed of women who understand that you have to take care of your skin and that makeup can be simple.”

Nothing in the collection costs more than P499. “With Kath as our collaborator, she wanted to make sure the price points were accessible to her fans. But even with those price points, we really perfected the formula first para skin-caring pa rin even for people like Kath who have sensitive skin,” said Rissa.

Kath added, “Makeup doesn’t have to be complicated. Even if you’re a beginner, Generation Happy Skin is very easy to use, that I can promise. And they’re good for your skin.”

Before the grand launch at Mega Fashion Hall on August 18, sets were made available on the Happy Skin website and they sold out in eight hours. “We are really overwhelmed with the support we received even before the launch. I hope the makeup will make them feel even more beautiful and also empower women and let them know that you don’t need too much to be beautiful. Sometimes less is more,” Kath said.

Here’s a look at the complete collection:

Stay Fresh Weightless Pressed Powder

This lightweight buildable face powder foundation (P499) is available in three shades: light beige, medium beige (Kath’s shade) and natural beige.

“It’s weightless. It’s true to its name and it makes you stay fresh, it’s very light but gives you the right coverage also,” said Erica Flores, Happy Skin’s head of product development.

“It covers blemishes,” said Kath.

Stay Fresh Weightless Pressed Powder  comes with a sponge in a separate hygienic compartment and is packed with concentrated sunflower seed oil to moisturize the skin.

Extra Drama Volumizing Mascara

Kathryn can’t live without mascara and she’s very proud of Generation Happy Skin’s Extra Drama Volumizing Mascara (P499).

“I’m a huge fan of mascara. I’m not a fan of falsies. If there’s a makeup product that I need to use every day, it would be mascara and eyelash curler because for me, iba yung effect na buhay yung eyes,” said Kathryn. “Even sa teleserye hindi nila ako nakikita na wala akong mascara.”

It took them three tries to get Generation Happy Skin’s Extra Drama Volumizing Mascara just right. Kath said, “It’s extra volumizing and hindi magka-clump yung lashes mo. I like that it looks very natural, it just enhances the thickness of your lashes. It’s smudge-proof as well.”

It’s sweat-proof and is formulated with sunflower seed oil for added nutrition, keeping your lashes from thinning and falling out.

Perfect Brows Long-Lasting Liquid Pen

This brow pen (P399) is smudge-proof and comes in a universal brown color that suits everyone.

“Hindi kumpleto ang look kung walang kilay,” said Kath. “This stays on all day even if I work out.”

“Even those with filled brows, with microbladed brows can use it. Because it’s very thin, it can really mimic the strands,” said Erica.

Instant Glow Longwear Powder Blush

Long-wearing and blendable, the Instant Glow Longwear Powder Blush (P399) can give your cheeks a natural-looking flush.

“Gusto ko laging flushed yung cheeks ko,” said Kath.

It comes in two shades: Love, which is pinkish, and Freedom, a peachy hue.

Kiss & Bloom Water Lip & Cheek Tint

Kath and Rissa are both very excited about the tints. “My favorite!” said Kath.

This no-mess, water-based tint (P299) comes in four buildable shades: Dainty (wearable red), Serene (pinkish red), Fearless (deep red) and Prim (brownish red).

“I’m a super fan of tints because I always work out and I feel that they’re so easy to use,” said Kathryn. “I didn’t want shades that were too pink or too red. We made different colors to fit different personalities. Personally, I like mixing Prim and Fearless.”

“Make sure to blend when you apply for a natural finish,” she added. “It gives you a natural flush and it doesn’t blotch even if you blend it on top of powder. How many tints can do that?”

“It’s really hard to find tints with these shades. These are very different, they’re very pigmented, they’re very comfy on the lips, and they last really long,” said Erica.

The tints are made with green tea extract, an antioxidant, and hops flower extract for extra nourishment.

My Lips But Better Ultra Matte Lippie

There are five colors available for P399 each: Authenticity (nude pink), Courage (nude brown), Spunk (peach brown), Wonder (berry red) and Moxie (deep red).

They may be ultra-matte but they’re also hydrating, using sunflower seed oil to replenish your lips’ moisture.

Kath’s favorite lippie shades are Moxie and Spunk. (She used Moxie in “The Hows of Us,” her upcoming film with Daniel Padilla.) And she really fought to keep the name Authenticity. “They found the name too long, baka daw mahirap i-recall but I said, kung Generation Happy Skin, tapos we’re talking about values, I think ‘yun yung di ko kayang i-let go. ‘Yun yung important, ‘yun yung campaign eh, being the real you. Yan talaga yung value ang pinakagusto ko, being authentic.”
