A man in Maryland, United States won $50,000 (around P2.6 million) in the lottery, all thanks to his best friend’s novel.

The man, identified only as Alex, said on Monday, Dec. 10, that he was inspired to play the lottery because of his best friend’s novel titled “Sunrise at the American Market”. The novel told the story of two strangers having coffee at their local convenience store, and their hobby of getting scratch-off tickets.

This encouraged him to get a $1 million Blowout instant ticket, to try his luck. As he began scratching, he noticed a diamond-shaped logo — indicating that he won the prize.

“Originally, when I saw the ticket and saw that I won, I immediately said, ‘This must be a mistake,’” he said. “I gasped, thinking there was no way I could possibly win that much!”

Alex said he plans to use his winnings to help his kids, then save the rest of the prize for the future. JB
