5 upcoming shows on Netflix we're dying to see - SCOUT Magazine

OCTOBER 27, 2022

Netflix is a safe space. Whether you’re in the mood for comedy, thriller, or coming-of-age, the genre of your liking is made accessible by the streaming platform. Although they already have a wide range of collection, there’s always something to look forward to. Since Netflix drops bombs after bombs, we’ve listed down what we’ve been dying to see.

The Umbrella Academy

Perhaps you’ve heard about The Umbrella Academy from My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way. While the band is now defunct, the lead singer’s passion project is nonetheless promising. His comic series focus on a dysfunctional family of superheroes who solve the crimes behind their father’s passing. Netflix joins the fun by announcing an upcoming adaptation of the comic book series published by Dark Horse Comics. With Steve Blackman in the process of its development, the show will premiere on  Netflix in 2019. On top of that, it stars our favorite girl Ellen Page as “The White Violin” and post-Doctor Who Tom Hopper as “Spaceboy.”

Maniac

As if there’s more to be said about Maniac. This Emma Stone and Jonah Hill reunion takes the plane into a different course 10 years after Superbad. The trailer which premiered a few days ago left the viewers asking for questions. If you’re a fan of sci-fi mystery series Black Mirror, then Maniac is definitely something to anticipate. Riding on life’s sad truths, the two main characters along ten other strangers travel to the facilities of Neberdine Pharmaceutical and Biotech for a three-day drug trial. It messes with reality and presents the endless possibilities of our advancing technology. Inevitably, questions are met along the way.

Watership Down

If you’re one to binge-watch animated films, you would know that they are not all light-hearted. They can get dark and creepy too which heightens the excitement. Watership Down is a co-production between BBC and Netflix based on Richard Adams’ acclaimed 1972 novel. The 1978 film adaptation caused some commotion for its portrayal of wicked and eerie while presenting the child-friendly premise of bunnies and fields. This is what we love about it–the clashing elements of innocence and macabre. It’s unfiltered and un-Pixar-ised storytelling. If that’s not enough, viewers say it resembles The Walking Dead but with rabbits. The upcoming series will premiere late 2018, with just the right timing for Halloween.

Green Eggs and Ham

Anyone who says creativity is limited obviously hasn’t read Dr. Seuss. With books like poetry in motion topped with crazy imagination, every page is a different world and we expect nothing less from the animated adaptation. Green Eggs and Ham, based on the 1960 novel, plays with the premise of cross-country adventure and intricacies of friendship. It is slated to air 13 half-hour episodes executively produced by Jared Stern, Ellen DeGeneres, Jeff Kleeman, Mike Karz and David Dobkin.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

While this technically defies the series list since it’s an anthology film, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is still something to look forward to. Directed by the Coen Brothers who have received critical acclaim for movies True Grit and Fargo, the film takes the viewers to Nebraska. The film is expected to premiere in 75th Venice International Film Festival and on Netflix this 2018.
