Prevented by the state-imposed Luzon-wide lockdown from holding a public exhibit, artists from Rizal Province decided to hold their Lenten exhibition online.

Originally set to be held at SM City East Ortigas, the exhibit has instead been mounted virtually to ensure everyone’s safety, said Angono artist Nani Reyes.

Aside from Reyes, other artists featured in the “Kristo Rizal: A Virtual Lenten Art Exhibition” are Bong Anore, Gem and Glenn Blanco, Jo Florendo, Erni Grande, Rey Punelas and more than 40 other Rizal-based painters.

Anore said the works on exhibit attempt to tackle themes related to Lent—repentance, conversion and compassion.

The works likewise represents and reflects on the passion of Christ and his sacrifice on the cross, the artist added.

“In an inexplicable way, we are moved to dab and create a picture with the aid of reliable brushes and seasoned pigments on the hostile canvases to come up with a spirited image we believe to be his very own one,” Anore explained.

He said their works depict “our savior through passion, death, and resurrection in a variety of styles, different strokes, mood and proportion as well as the masterful color renditions [which are] innovatively and uniquely identified only with Rizaleño artisans.”—CONTRIBUTED INQ
