After I got a photographer’s take on how to look good during a video call, I got asked to write about what one should wear. I quickly obliged by contacting Melville Sy. Melville is part of Quarator Studio, meaning he’s the stylist to a few of the biggest names in showbiz like Marian Rivera, Judy Ann Santos, Alden Richards, and Janine Gutierrez.
I also considered Melville as an excellent resource for this because when I first met him, he showcased immediately his knowledge in styling for film and TV. I can’t forget how he said that if the director asks for a pink blouse for the subject, he must have different shades of pink on hand, as colors can register differently under the lights and cameras. And you never know which one will make the final cut.
Dressing up for a video call may not be as stressful; it still something one may need some tips to do right. But it can be fun as well. Here’s what Melville has to say.
Are there any factors to consider when choosing what to wear?
Since the upper torso is seen, choose tops that are business appropriate. You can even throw in a jacket or blazer if it makes you feel more in the zone. Being fully dressed can also help you feel that you’re at work and not at home. If you’ll only dress the upper torso, be careful that your casual bottom won’t show!
Should you consider the color of what you wear and how it suits/contrasts your background?
Yes, given that there are usually many people in a video meeting. Avoid distracting background or prints.
How to know which colors work best for your skin tone?
If you have a cool skin tone, you will look good in aqua, cobalt, navy, burgundy, lilac, and blush. If warm tone, mustard, burnt orange, red, and forest green. Neutrals work for any skin tone.
How to accessorize properly?
Dainty or small accessories layered is cool and trendy. Also, it won’t be distracting.
Is there a fool-proof top anyone can wear to look their best?
A white button-down is always perfect. You can accessorize it, too, depending on your style.
What’s your quarantine uniform?
I love Uniqlo Airism because it’s really comfy, especially with the weather here in the Philippines.
How are celebrities doing workwear right?
Marian Rivera wore a comfy white shirt when she was cooking for the frontliners. She wears Faithfull The Brand for her work at home Zoom meetings/guestings. Also, she wears local designers in her posts.
What activities have you enjoyed doing while in quarantine?
Fixing my closet and rearranging stuff that can be re-used and donated. I’ve also dabbled a bit in the kitchen, something I never had time to do before.
