There are many reasons why people get themselves tattooed and weatherman Kim Atienza shared his as he got a new tattoo recently right in his own home.
Atienza welcomed Carl Dalupirit, one of the tattoo artists of 55 Tinta, in his residence for the tattoo session, as seen in his YouTube channel on Sept. 12.
Dalupirit wore a PPE (personal protective equipment) and assured Atienza and the viewers that all his materials are sterilized and disposable, as he laid them down on the table – stencil, cardboard for the design, a tattoo machine, needle, petroleum jelly and ink, among others.
Atienza’s presentation briefly discussed the history of tattoos, stating that the discovery of a mummy called Otzi the Iceman who lived in 3100 B.C. revealed that people already wore tattoos as early as that time. In the Philippines, Atienza cited two places known for tattoos – Kalinga and the Visayas. When the Spaniards came, having a tattoo was discouraged.
Atienza recalled that getting his first tattoo was the most painful, and that it was done by the legendary Apo Whang Od. He came to Buscalan, Kalinga about two or three years ago and had himself tattooed by her.
“Ang pain level noon nasa mga 8 kasi de-pukpok ‘yun, eh. Ang tawag doon pambabatok at si Apo Whang Od ang pinakahuling mambabatok sa Pilipinas na buhay pa hanggang ngayon,” he said.
(The pain level of that was 8 because it was through pambabatok and Apo Whang Od is the oldest mambabatok in the Philippines who is still alive.)
Why get a tattoo?
Atienza claimed he had second thoughts in getting himself tattooed, being a Christian. He asked for advice from a pastor who told him, “’Kung anuman ang ilalagay mo sa balat mo, kinakailangan inspirado ka. (Whatever it is you’re going to put in your skin, you need to be inspired by it.) Does it bring you closer to God? Does it inspire other people?”
He then came up with a decision: “Whatever I quote sa braso ko, inspirado ako.” (Whatever quote on my arms, it must inspire me.)
“This is my life verse,” Atienza revealed as he spoke about his new Bible verse tattoo. “’My grace is all you need,’ 2 Corinthians 12:9. ‘My strength is made perfect in your weakness.’” JB
