In a short video that accompanied her post, Mercado reiterated her call to help save the dolphin species.

“Alam nating lahat na napakaraming national treasures sa Pilipinas at isa diyan ang Irrawaddy dolphins.

“Alam n’yo bang nanganganib na silang mawala? Sa Pilipinas, classified sila as critically endangered,” she said, adding that the dolphins can be found at the Malampaya Sound in the municipality of Quezon in Palawan, and at the Iloilo Guimaras Strait in Pulupandan, Negros Occidental, where they number at just about a dozen.

(We all know that there are many national treasures in the Philippines and one of them is the Irrawaddy dolphins. Do you know that they are in danger of going extinct? In the Philippines, they are classified as critically endangered.)

According to the petition, scientists estimate that there are only 10 to 13 dolphins left of the said species in Negros Occidental. Mercado appealed to netizens to help in the preservation of this rare dolphin species.

“Kaunti na lang sila at kung hindi tayo gagawa ng paraan para sila ay protektahan at alagaan, they might go extinct. Hindi na sila aabutin ng susunod na henerasyon,” she stressed.

(There are just a few of them and if we are not going to do anything to protect and care for them, they might go extinct. They will not make it to the next generation.)

“Share this call-out, sign the petition para gawing marine protected area ang kanilang habitat. Mas marami tayo, mas malakas at mas lalawak ang ating boses. Let us save the Irrawaddy dolphins from extinction,” she urged.

(Share this call out, sign the petition so that their habitat will become a marine protected area. We are many more, we have more power and our voices will have a wider reach. Let us save the Irrawaddy dolphins from extinction.) NVG
