Veteran actor Leo Martinez is appealing to the government to allow senior citizens to go out.

Last week, the government has allowed fully vaccinated senior citizens to go out. However, they could travel only within their zones or region and to areas under general community quarantine and modified general community quarantine. They also have to present their COVID-19 vaccination cards and observe the minimum public health standards.

Martinez’s plea can be seen in a video posted by weatherman Kim Atienza on his Instagram page last Monday, June 14.

Martinez said he agrees with election lawyer and counsel to Vice President Leni Robredo, Atty. Romulo Macalintal, that senior citizens already vaccinated be allowed to go out of their homes.

“Luwag-luwagan naman kaming mga senior citizen na nakakumpleto na ng bakuna,” Martinez appealed. (Please relax restrictions on us senior citizens who have completed our vaccinations.)

Martinez feels it has been more than enough that senior citizens have been staying inside their homes for over a year.

“Aba’y mahigit isang taon na po kaming nakakulong, hindi po naman natural ‘yun, bata man o matanda,” he said.

(It’s more than one year that we have been confined in our homes, that’s abnormal, whether for the young or the old.)

Martinez said elderly people who will be allowed to go out will not do anything wrong anyway.

“Hindi naman kami magpapakalat-kalat d’yan sa mga kalye, hindi naman kami makikipag-inuman kung saan-saang kanto at hindi naman kami pagkakaguluhan ng mga babae, dahil matanda na nga eh. 76 na, eh,” he said.

(We will not loiter around in the streets. We will not drink at street corners and women will not be hounding us because we’re already old. I’m 76.)

Martinez wants elderly people like himself to again experience what it feels like to live with freedom.

“Gusto lang naming makalabas para makita uli, maamoy, marinig, malasap at masalat ang dating kinagawian, ang mga nakasanayan na,” he said.

(We just want to be able to go out so we can once more see, smell, hear, taste and touch the things we used to sense, the things we have been accustomed to.)

He ended his plea by saying, “Maawa naman kayo. Bakit ba kami pang mga kakaunti na lang ang panahon dito ang pinagbabawalang makamusta ulit ang ating mundo? Malungkot naman ‘yun.”

(Please have mercy. Why is it us who have just a little time left on this earth are the ones being restricted to see our world? That’s sad.) JB
