Filipino and African-American artist Chaz Bear’s musical project Toro Y Moi announced his seventh studio album entitled Mahal earlier this year.
Known for his genre-traversing sound spanning everything from indie rock to “Chillwave”, the 35-year-old artist’s musical project pays homage to his roots by way of iconic Filipino imagery, as suggested by his newest single “Postman.” Shot in the chilly hills of San Francisco, “Postman” sees light, psychedelic funk and pairs it with Boy Bawang, Balikbayan boxes, and even a flying jeepney that Toro Y Moi coasts as a travelling postman sending letters back to various places in the Philippines.
After signing to Dead Oceans (joining the likes of Phoebe Bridgers and Japanese Breakfast) late last year, the announcement of his first album for the label came soon after and is slated for a release this coming April 29th.
With his arsenal of skills covering not just music but also art and design, it would be interesting to see how Bear pulls from his roots and crafts his own take on Philippine popular culture. If the visual for “Postman” gives any indication, it’s going to be a trip.
