“Euphoria” star Sydney Sweeney is set to make her superhero debut

Sony’s tie-in Marvel Cinematic Universe is undeniably inferior to Disney’s as proven by the lackluster “Venom” films and the clowned on “Morbius.” However, with the arrival of Kraven the Hunter, and the announcement of the upcoming Madame Web film starring Dakota Johnson and “Euphoria” star Sydney Sweeney, Sony looks to inject new life into their rather stagnant line of superhero flicks.

The Madame Web film stars Dakota Johnson as its titular character; a clairvoyant mutant who isn’t exactly a Spider-Man variant herself despite taking the lead in a project featuring well-known personalities from our favorite wall-crawler’s comic narrative. There aren’t many details out there concerning the film, and scheduling is relatively unclear given the SAG-AFTRA strike, however, we do know that Sydney Sweeney is also confirmed to play Julia Carpenter a.k.a Spider-Woman.

In an interview with Variety, she shared that after booking the role, “I was freaking out, of course. I went straight to the comic store, and I bought every comic that mentioned my character.” She added, “I think it’s different from what people expect a superhero movie to be,” hopeful that the upcoming film will not be affected by the genre fatigue brought about by the massive influx of Marvel and DC titles.

Madame Web
Julia Carpenter also dons the mantle of Madame Web

For those unfamiliar, according to Marvel, Julia Carpenter is a single mother who was manipulated by her old college friend to undergo a series of experimental treatments for the creation of a government secret agent. This endowed her with superpowers, giving birth to the mantle of Spider-Woman and eventually, Arachne. There’s no telling whether or not Sony will delve into her origins, given that it is after all a Madame Web-focused title. If anything, we will likely see her as an already-established hero.

The Madame Web film also stars Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Emma Roberts, Mike Epps, Adam Scott, and Zosia Mamet. S. J. Clarkson is set to direct, and the title is based on a screenplay by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. The film, if everything goes according to plan, is set to be released in February 2024.
