The Grammys wants us to listen to BGYO (and these other rising Asian acts) - SCOUT

OCTOBER 27, 2022

The Aces of P-pop have once shown their impact in the P-pop community, solidifying what Filipino artists can achieve through music and passion. From performing at the 2021 Asian Creative Academy Awards, they’ve come a long way in recent years—and their recent recognition proves this.

On May 12, The Recording Academy released a feature highlighting Asian Pop acts that deserve our attention, where they included the five-member group: “BGYO has been redefining what it means to be a boy band in the Philippines.”

They also recognized the training the boys went through, which is said to be “similar to the K-pop trainee system in South Korea.”

The article also brought up the group’s success after their first song dropped. “Their debut single ‘The Light’ made the group the fifth Filipino artist ever to appear on the Billboard Next Big Sound chart, debuting at No. 2.”

BGYO is the only homegrown act featured in the story. The article also zeroed in on artists from Thailand, South Korea, Hong Kong, China, Japan, and Vietnam.

“What a pleasantly shocking morning!” wrote the official BGYO Facebook page in response to the feature. On the same day of the article release, the boys had their performance in Quezon City for their live album showcase.

The Grammy article also sheds light on the voice BGYO amplifies in their songs, especially in themes of “self-love, empowerment, and hope.”

“The quintet mix elements of pop and R&B, and attribute their music and style to their Filipino roots. BGYO’s lyrics focus on social issues relevant to youth,” the feature added.

Their 2021 single “Fly Away,” which highlights determination and encouragement toward reaching a dream, is a perfect example.

BGYO’s group name stands for “Becoming the change, Going further, You and I, Originally Filipino.” Being true to their name’s meaning, BGYO focuses on producing music that has “meaningful messaging pertinent to youth today.”

Apart from the P-pop boy group, the 10 Asian artists featured in the article were Car, The Garden (South Korea), Lexie Liu (China), So!YoON! (South Korea), PRETZELLE (Thailand), Baek Yerin (South Korea), Sexy Zone (Japan), Tyson Yoshi (Hong Kong), MIN (Vietnam), and the OG lover boy, Phum Viphurit from Thailand.
