One great thing about the 21st centrury: We have constant conversations as to why stretch marks, menstruation, and other physical conditions that naturally occur in women should be celebrated rather than deformed to fit one standard. Though this conversation is a long-time (centuries, to be exact) coming, at least we are here. Plus social media is giving us a bigger platform to allow women to be who they are without feeling ashamed.
Cinta Tort Cartró, a 21-year old artist shares the same idea as she paints stretch marks into works of art. This follows up her other body positive projects that involve painting colored explosions on women’s underwear to represent menstruation, and photographing nude women with their breasts clad in flowers to join the #freethenipple movement.

Glamour, Allure, and Yahoo! Beauty have all paid attention to the artist and how her works are one way to tear down the stigma surrounding the female form. She shared to Yahoo! Beauty how her creation progressed, “It all started as a form of expression, but it quickly turned into social commentary of the male-dominated culture we live in.”

Other than that, Cinta’s works are all about changing even the way women percieve their “imperfections,” drawing from her personal experience. “I grew up feeling sometimes out of place. I’m tall and big, so it’s important for me to state in my art that everyone is beautiful and those ‘flaws’ are not that. They make us unique and special.”
Here’s to more women like you, Cinta! Body shamers ought to be scared.
