The year 2020 has brought both maladies and remixes—tons of ’em. With the chart-topping Cardi B coronavirus mix and recently, the Kim Chiu classroom rap, beatmakers show no sign of stopping. And sometimes, the original artist can join in on the fun. That’s the case for Kim Chiu, at least.
By now, we’ve probably come across the actress’ “word vomit” on the ABS-CBN shutdown, which happened during a Facebook Live session with the network’s other personalities. “Sa classroom may batas, bawal lumabas, oh bawal lumabas. Pero pag sinabi, pag nag-comply ka na bawal lumabas pero may ginawa ka sa pinagbabawal nila, inayos mo ’yung law ng classroom niyo at sinubmit mo ulit ay pwede na pala ikaw lumabas.”
The sentiment sprouted mixes, memes and the ubiquitous TikTok dance challenges. But being the target of jokes wasn’t a laughing matter to Chiu, who had to take a break from her phone to “keep her sanity.”
“I was really down the past few days…But of course, pag may problema, hindi mo dapat tinatambayan, doon tayo dapat sa option na move forward,” she says.
Taking cues from the ideology of the philosopher of our times T. Swift, the actress shook it off, and did what most musicians do in times of peril—make a single out of it. Alongside beat arranger DJ Squammy and Adrian Crisanto, Chiu released her official rendition of “Bawal Lumabas.” Featuring clips of her at home, on travels and at outreach programs, Chiu’s single includes lines like, “Ang buhay ay parang isang malaking silid-aralan, iba’t-ibang tao, pangarap at bisyo, ’yan ang totoo. Sa bawat hakbang, may leksyon na nakaabang. We will not move on, if we don’t learn our lesson.” Yep, she saw that school analogy and went for it.
