Chef Gaggan Anand resigns from his self-named restaurant | Lifestyle.INQ

OCTOBER 27, 2022

It’s (unfortunately) official: Acclaimed Indian chef Gaggan Anand is resigning from Gaggan, the restaurant he opened in 2010 and propelled to Michelin-star fame. It’s also famously the only Indian restaurant to date that’s been on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, placing 10th in 2015, fifth in 2018, and fourth this year, and was the consecutive Asia’s Best winner from 2015 to 2018.

What you all heard from the news about my resignation is TRUE. I resigned as chef of Gaggan restaurant, effective 24 Jun 2019. I’m still business partner of the company. The condition of my resignation is still under reviewing between me and my partners. Next meeting is end of Jul after I come back from family trip in Europe. I was hurted and too tired. But I will make sure that, whatever the result, all Gaggan family will be well taken care. When I say “family”, it’s my staff, my customers and all my fans included. I love ❤️ u all I will update everything when the right time comes. Ps: I have to look for a new job soon 😂 😆 😝 #theworlds50best #gaggan #hugmeismelllikecurry #getwetbkk

Citing major differences with his shareholders as the reason for his resignation, Anand shared to Singaporean broadsheet Straits Times that though he’s leaving as a chef, he’ll currently be staying on as a shareholder of the restaurant. However, the future is still uncertain. “I’m planning to buy over the other shares and if I succeed, I’ll still run the restaurant. Otherwise, I may open a new restaurant,” the newspaper quotes Anand.

In the same interview, Anand also shared his frustration with the voting system for the 50 Best Restaurants list, noting that the voters mostly reside in Europe—which is why Asian restaurants don’t get featured as often, something that we talked about before. (Read: Toyo Eatery is the sole Filipino restaurant on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list) “There’s no Chinese restaurant except for The Chairman and none in India or Australia. We need to clean up the voting system,” Anand said.
