1. Never keep your pet in your lap or the front seat. Even at 56 kph, a 60-pound unrestrained pet becomes a 2,700-pound projectile. Keep your pet safe and secure in a well-ventilated crate or carrier; or secure your pet in a seatbelt attached to its harness.
2. Get your pet geared up for a long trip by taking it on a series of short drives first, gradually lengthening the time. This will get it comfortable and make your trip easier.
3. Never leave your animal alone in a parked vehicle during any season.
4. Keep your pet hydrated. If you are driving, plan for plenty of stops to walk your pet and give it food and water.
5. Your pet’s travel-feeding schedule should start with a light meal three to four hours prior to departure.
6. Just as you pack your suitcase, pack your pet’s travel bag. Don’t forget the leash, food and water bowls, plastic bags to clean up waste, medication, vaccination records and a favorite toy or reminder of home to give your pet a sense of familiarity.
