This month’s Pipeline, an international art magazine based in Hong Kong, features local photographer and multidisciplinary artist Wawi Navarroza’s work on the cover.

For the magazine’s Photography Annual issue, the chosen photo on the cover was “Terrarium noXVI” from Wawi’s Hunt & Gather, Terraria series. The work is a terrarium and inside is a mix of wood from a demolished movie theater on Evangelista Street, Manila, plants from the National Anti-Poverty Commission, grass from National Housing Authority, and soil from Manila Polo Club, among others

Hunt & Gather, Terraria is a collaboration where Metro Manila urban dwellers were invited by Wawi to search for soil, plants, and ephemera from meaningful locations in the city. These are then arranged inside glass terrariums by Wawi herself and photographed as still-lifes.

Within the terrarium may be a composite of various things, but it also holds the city’s memories and pressing realities.

After the success of her photography festival Fotosemana Manila, Wawi’s photos continue to gain more exposure.
