RED Turnip Theater presents the play “Tribes,” ongoing weekends until Sept. 4 at Power Mac Center Spotlight in Makati.
“Tribes” is a thoughtful yet funny portrayal of how one family navigates the fact that their son Billy is deaf. Billy’s unconventional family has tried to raise him as part of the hearing world and neglected to adopt sign language in their home. Now Billy has returned from university and is struggling to integrate into his hearing family.
When Billy meets Sylvia, a young woman who is becoming deaf and been raised by a deaf family, he finally discovers what it means to be heard. Tribes follows Billy’s attempt to be a part of many worlds at once—his family’s, Sylvia’s and the deaf community—all while striving to find his own identity.
The cast includes Kalil Almonte (Billy); Angela Padilla (Sylvia); Cris Pasturan (Daniel); Teroy Guzman (Christopher); Dolly de Leon (Beth); and Thea Yrastorza (Ruth).
“Tribes” is directed by Topper Fabregas. The production team includes Ed Lacson (set design); Marta Lovina (production design); John Batalla (lighting design); Teresa Barrozo (sound design); John Xandre Baliza (sign language instructor).
“Tribes” won in 2012 the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play, New York Drama Critics Circle Award, Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best Play.

Korean Royal Palace art exhibition
The Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines opens on Sept. 1 its third art exhibition for 2016 titled “Opulence: The Art of Korean Royal Palace.”
The exhibit aims to present the Korean cultural heritage through the palaces of Joseon Dynasty, the Korean peninsula’s last dynasty. It will display 19 pieces consisting of royal paintings, historical items and garments used in the palace. The artworks are created by the traditional artists from the Korea National University of Cultural Heritage (NUCH).
Spanning over 5,000 years of different eras, Korea has its own cultural and spiritual distinct dynasties.
The Joseon Dynasty ruled over the Korean Peninsula for more than 500 years, from the fall of the Goryeo Dynasty in 1392 until the Japanese Occupation in 1910.
The exhibit is co-organized by NUCH, and will run until Nov. 18 at the KCC Exhibition Hall. Admission is free.

Filipino-Chinese photo contest
The Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII), in cooperation with the Camera Club of the Philippines, launches an online photo contest that aims to promote the ever-changing Filipino-Chinese culture.
“Connections” loosely translates to guan xi, a relationship of one person or party to another with obligation built overtime, or simply, reciprocity.
The online photography competition is open to both professional and amateur Filipino photographers, ages 18 and up. Cash prize is up to P70,000.
The competition runs until Oct. 2.

Baking seminar set
The Golden Treasure Skills and Development Program will conduct a one-day seminar on cake and bread making at the UPIS ( Integrated School) Building, University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City, on Aug. 27, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
The seminar features a demo, food tasting and hands-on experience on how to make French macarons, churros, caramel cake, black forest, lemon squares, and breads like pan de sal and cheese bread.
There will also be a bonus course on how to make cupcakes, fondant cake and basic cake decorating.
