A renovation project for the 55-year-old Space Needle, announced this week, will update the landmark’s observation deck with floor-to-ceiling glass for enhanced views of the Puget Sound.

Built for the Century 21 World’s Fair in Seattle in 1962, the Space Needle has long defined the city’s skyline, and the renovation project team, in partnership with design firm Olson Kundig, was careful to create a design that will not alter the landmark from afar.

The update, however, will change the visitor experience inside, notably cladding the observation desk in floor-to-ceiling glass and reimagining the restaurant level with a new rotating glass floor that will reveal never-before-seen downward views of the structure, including the mechanisms of the elevator and rotating floor.

A new circular stairway made of steel, wood and glass will likewise be added to lead from the observation desk to the restaurant level.

The Space Needle currently houses several dining experiences, including the rotating SkyCity restaurant as well as a café and wine bar, while a new restaurant and lounge experience showcasing the tower’s views is also in the works. As the project unfolds, the dining areas will re-open one by one, beginning next spring.

Construction is due to start in September. While the project is under way, guests will be able to see the construction work in progress and visit new areas as they are completed. JB
