Veteran actress Rita Avila is once again appealing for a stop to animal cruelty after learning about new cases of dogs and cats suffering from abuse.

Avila stressed the need to help abused dogs and cats in her Instagram post yesterday, Oct. 3, where she shared with fans a short message from her husband, director FM Reyes, along with a poster message from Shake Paws.

“Alam mo ba asawa ko yung pusa na buntis na nakikikain sa atin, yesterday came back with a big wound in her body na parang tinaga sya. Pinapahuli ko kay ate kasi I want na ipagamot dahil may buto daw na litaw,” Reyes said in the message.

(Do you know, my wife, that the pregnant cat which eats with us yesterday came back with a big wound [on] her body; it looks like she was stabbed. I asked Ate to catch her because I want to have her treated, because there was said to be a bone exposed [from the wound].)

Meanwhile, the poster she shared stated, “Would you believe me if I told you… the most dangerous animal in the world is human?”

“Ang lungkot naman na may mga taong malupit sa mga hayop na di naman sila sinasaktan,” Avila said. “Ilang aso at pusa na ang nasagip namin sa masama nilang kapalaran. May pumupunta lang para maki-kain; minsan pag sila ay sugatan o buntis at naghahanap ng panandaliang tirahan.”

(It’s sad that there are people who are cruel on animals that don’t even hurt them. How many dogs and cats have we rescued from their unfortunate conditions? There are those that come to us just to be fed, sometimes they are wounded or pregnant, and looking for temporary shelter.)

The veteran actress is saddened by the reality that there are indeed humans who find joy in hurting animals. She thinks there are underlying reasons why a human would hurt an animal.

“Marahil, malaki ang galit sa sarili ng mga taong malupit sa hayop. Maliit ang tingin sa sarili kaya kelangang parusahan ang mas ‘maliit’ pa sa kanila,” she explained.

(Maybe, they got great anger on themselves, these people who are cruel to animals. Maybe they are insecure, thus the need to punish creatures that are weaker than them.)

Like in the case of the abused animals, Avila hopes for animal abusers to be rehabilitated and still experience love.

Avila and Reyes recently worked together in the series “Ang sa Iyo ay Akin.” The actress is known to be vocal about animal rights and welfare. JB
