This year’s National Museums and Galleries Month celebrates the importance of galleries and museums in helping build national consciousness. With the theme “Building the Nation, One Exhibit at a time,” this month will be highlighting the role of museums and galleries as “avenues for dialogues which best concern the general public, including pressing issues on resilience, peace, and security.” 

In honor of this year’s National Museums and Galleries Month, here is a list of art exhibits that will have you talking.

Fields of Color, Altro Mondo Creative Space

Inspired by works from the American color field movement in the ’50s and early ’60s, textile artist Olivia d’Aboville crafts vibrant canvasses made of handwoven abaca and polyester textiles from Cebu. Her solo exhibit deviates from her normally neutral palette, and is comprised of comprised of swathes of bold and solid colored textiles.

This group exhibit by Darby Vincent Alcoseba, Maria Francisca Andraianne Juarez, Mark Belicario, Lucas Rañola, Rainer Duhaylungsod, Renulo T. Pautan and Romar Quimada showcases their reflections on their hometown by celebrating the scenic views in and around Toledo, Cebu—which has been christened the Aroma Art Atelier.

What Comes to You, District Gallery

District Gallery’s latest exhibition features art that expresses different reactions to various stimuli. Using the image of a Snellen chart, simplified spaces, and interpretations on the body, identity, and our relationship with the natural, artists Ian Cadiong, Jao San Pedro, Koki Lxx, and Mark Copino use different mediums to express “what comes to you”.

To Give A Moment A Name, The Drawing Room

To Give A Moment A Name is an intermedia exhibition by Lesley-Anne Cao, Katherine Nuñez, and Derek Tvmala. The group exhibit hopes to capture moments that activate the artists’ current creative and ideological preoccupations, and eventually open up conversations on worldview, ecologies of thought, and trajectories.

Pure Gold – Upcycled! Upgraded!, UP Vargas Museum

The UP Vargas Museum, in partnership with the Goethe-Institute and the German Institute for International Relations is bringing in an exhibit that highlights upcycling and recycling in design. Pure Gold – Upcycled! Upgraded! is comprised of 76 pieces from seven regions around the world, showcasing alternative production techniques and processing unwanted by-products.

“Fluctuare” is defined as an irregular rise and fall, moving like the waves; and it is this definition that drives Ramon Diaz, Juerg Casserini, and Cesar Caballero’s exhibit forward. This group exhibition explores the idea of human beings who are constantly moved by migrations, unforeseen circumstances, and advances.

High Tide, Galerie Stephanie

Using the imagery of tides that rise and engulf territories, artists Frances Alvarez and Yas Doctor explore the possibilities that emerge from ruin and unpredictable circumstances through “High Tide.” The exhibit hopes to delve into inquiries about nature becoming a source of destruction and the role of circumstance in one’s development.
