Did Taylor Swift Release Her Albums on Spotify to Overshadow Katy Perry? | Lifestyle.INQ

OCTOBER 27, 2022

Bet you thought the whole Taylor Swift and Katy Perry drama was over, didn’t you? While Katy is celebrating the release of her new album Witness, fans also discovered that Taylor made all her albums available on Spotify at the same, exact time.

You’re probably asking, “What’s the big deal? It might just be coincidence.” But considering the bad blood (pun definitely intended) the two had in the past, it’s unlikely. Also, if you recall, Taylor pulled her albums out of Spotify in 2014 because she didn’t want free streaming sites to deplete paid album sales.

Don’t get us wrong, her intentions were justifiable from a marketing standpoint even though fans were upset by it. We could easily say that putting her songs back is also a smart marketing ploy. However, it’s also safe to rule out that this is just friendly competition between two artists. They both wrote songs about each other—”Bad Blood” and “Swish Swish”—and Taylor allegedly stole Katy’s back-up dancers. (Digital Spy made a timeline here so you can pause and grab some popcorn.)

This begs the question: Did Taylor Swift let go of her principles as an artist so she can overshadow Katy Perry?

To be fair, Taylor did do just that. As of writing, #1989ListeningParty and Taylor Swift are trending on Twitter. Both have overpassed Katy’s #KPWWW hashtag. Meanwhile, fans were also quick to pick up on how petty this whole ordeal is.

The timing of it all is too shady to go unnoticed. It’s like Taylor purposely did this to overshadow a woman she dislikes. We can’t help but look back on the times when she preached about being a feminist and promoting women empowerment. We’re also not discounting the fact that Katy may have done something wrong to merit this kind of response from Taylor. But is it really worth it to go through lengths to drag Katy to the dirt?

In a recent interview with James Corden, Katy admitted that their beef is still ongoing. “There’s a situation. Honestly, it’s like, she started it and it’s time for her to finish it,” she said. Katy also opened up to NME about their feud saying that Taylor’s trying to “assassinate my character.”

“I mean, I’m not Buddha—things irritate me. I wish that I could turn the other cheek every single time, but I’m also not a pushover, you know? Especially when someone tries to assassinate my character with little girls [their respective fan groups]. That’s so messed up!”

Taylor, on the other hand, has not said anything. Although we’re hoping that she’s grown out of pulling the victim card. If she does claim it’s a coincidence, so be it. But there’s a better way to address a problem rather than playing sly tricks to get revenge.
