The Swiftie level of Kara David? Analyzing ‘Champagne Problems’

When Taylor Swift’s “Champagne Problems” dropped on Earth, everybody Moved. How can a fantastic four-minute recording off “Evermore” call us out using night trains and dancing and a ring of someone’s mom buried in someone’s pocket? She knew we’d sit here in this hurt. Unbelievable.

I’d imagine award-winning journalist Kara David nodding at me. Not only because she’s a Swiftie (peep her laptop sticker) but also because she’s that Swiftie who’d actually use the song to teach us in her virtual classroom.

Premiered on Jan. 25, her latest vlog “Analyzing Taylor Swift’s Champagne Problems” schools budding storytellers on the present-past-future structure. She begins unpacking using one of her “i-Witness” documentaries “Minsan sa Isang Taon.” Posted in 2021, the docu uses the same storytelling technique to shed light on the story of Sitio Banli, an impoverished community in Saranggani.

Eventually, David reveals how this was the same “formula” in Taylor Swift’s “Champagne Problems,” a song she’s currently raving about. She gets down to the details, such as the day of the proposal and the speaker’s future wishes. “Di ba? Pareho ’yung past at tsaka future, medyo ti-nweak lang nang konti ’yung future.”

David is definitely that college professor we all want to have. But class is in session not only for Swifties. Across her channel, the journalist has prepared videos for everyone who’s down to know the basics of TV writing. If you’re not subscribed, wyd?
