After scouring my kitchen one time for a filling midnight snack and failing to find a packed treat, I settled for the next best (and hassle-free) thing: a quick and easy-to-make no-bake dessert.
As usual, the TikTok community has an answer for that, and this time, it comes in the form of mug cakes. Although it has been around for a while, this dessert has resurfaced as a trend thanks to a viral two-ingredient Oreo recipe going around the video-sharing platform recently.

To make a mug cake, all you have to do is microwave a mug filled with cake batter. You’ll know it’s done after 50 seconds or when it’s achieved the gooeyness you like. Let it cool for a few minutes and voila, you can start digging in.
To make chocolate mug cakes, all you need are flour, cocoa, baking powder, sugar, milk, vegetable oil and vanilla essence.

A simple recipe for vanilla mug cakes also uses unsalted butter, milk, vanilla extract, sugar, all-purpose flour, baking powder and salt. From there, you can customize by adding in some Oreos to make a cookies and cream version or mix in some matcha or coffee powder.
You can also try different combinations of toppings like chocolates and marshmallows or fruits like lemon and blueberry.
Lastly, here’s a quick tip: use a large mug. Aside from giving you more cake, it will prevent spillage as you microwave the cake. And, of course, make sure that the mug you’re using is microwave-safe.
