Sustainability—we hear this term more often like a buzz word nowadays. ‘Sustainable design,’ ‘sustainable clothing,’ ‘sustainable industries’ are all the stuff of TED Talks and rallies around the world—and for good reason! So before you write it off as just another 2017 trend in the same realm as veganism, crossfit, and avocado toast, sustainable living is actually a lot easier to do than you think.
Gimmicks aside, all it really means is living as waste-free as you can. And If you’re still out here thinking, “why should I give a shit when I’m just one person in the grander scheme of things?,” consider this. By recycling just one glass bottle, you save enough electricity to power a 100-watt bulb for four hours while saving one aluminum can can run your TV for six hours, according to Go Green Initiative. Still not convinced even when all you have to do is literally step your foot outside and FEEL the climate change? A quick Google search for a carbon footprint calculator will tell you the exact impact you are making on the environment. This tool estimates the CO2 emissions which your daily activities cause — from the electricity your household consumes and the gas your car needs, to the flights you take, and more. But you don’t need a calculator to tell you that it’s probably a lot.
Imagine this–your friend breaks up with her boyfriend and is completely heartbroken. She wants you to come over and get drunk and talk shit about her ex. She calls you because you’ve always been there for her since the beginning, always the shoulder to cry on, always the one who consoles her when she’s sad.
But this time, you say no. You tell her you can’t come because you have deadlines, an exam, and a long list of stuff to do. You tell her all your reasons, but instead of understanding, she calls you selfish and hangs up. You feel bad, so even though you know that going to her will probably screw up your plans, you go to her. You drink with her, listen to her as she mopes. She tells you that you’re a good friend–the best friend she’s ever had. But the reality is that the exchange for friendship is your messed up priorities.
There are two lessons here: One, your friend is toxic AF and you have to let her go if she can’t even begin to understand and empathize with your situation. And two, choosing yourself is not selfish. Self-love, although often blurred as selfishness, is not an excuse. Self-love is the kind of love that all of us deserve and need. It may feel a lot like an indulgence–like a privilege that not everyone can enjoy. But it’s really not. It shouldn’t be.
Urban Dictionary defines the term “adulting” as “to carry out one or more duties and responsibilities expected of fully-developed individuals.” But we all know what adulting really is, in all its ugly glory. It’s attempting (sometimes failing) to live on your own, supporting yourself financially, and eating with a broken, angry hunger because you can’t find that one fork that you stole from your parents’ house.
But really, with all the memes and jokes around the internet that make fun of people who are starting their own lives, it’s easy to feel like being an adult is like trying to float on boiling hot water, with a bunch of stones tied to your feet, all while attempting to take an Instagram story of it. And the thing is, it actually kind of is. There’s a lot of work that comes with being a real adult, and none of it includes using paper plates for the rest of your life because you don’t want to do your own dishes. You need to do the real stuff–stuff that would actually help you pave your way towards being a real adult.
