The rainy season may have already started but muggy weather lasts forever in this tropical country we call home. To provide a respite from the heat and humidity, a direct-selling company has  launched a hydrating body lotion that is cool to the skin—and not at all sticky.

Avon’s newest addition to its popular Skin So Soft personal care line is the Skin So Soft Fast Hydration Body Gel Lotion. There is also a complementary body wash, but the lotion is really the signature product.

The launch, held at the sun-drenched executive lounge of Solaire Resort & Casino, was attended by Avon Philippines president and general manager Julie Tatarczuk and the product range’s image model Georgina Wilson.

Guests seated at the long table reached for the lotion and willingly slathered it on their arms. True enough, the opaque lotion was easy to spread and cool to the touch. There was no greasy residue, which is often the case when it comes to hydrating lotions. It reminded this writer, however, of Crabtree & Evelyn’s La Source range which had a similar scent, opacity and consistency.

Deep aqua technology

At the launch, lifestyle writers got the chance to sample the product.

Avon describes the technology behind it as a combination of deep aqua technology and watermint oil. The deep aqua complex uses deep sea minerals and lightweight hydrators. Combined with watermint oil, it provides skin with three times more hydration throughout the day.

“Skin So Soft is an iconic Avon brand that has been loved by millions of women worldwide for more than half a century,” Tatarczuk said. She isn’t kidding. The product range started out in 1961 as a bath oil before the range was expanded to include lotion, bath wash and body powder.

In April last year, Avon launched a Skin So Soft whitening lotion with glutathione. On the first day alone, local dealers sold 700,000 250-ml bottles.

“We actually ran out of stock,” said Jenny del Agua, Avon’s category manager for personal care. “The bulk of our sales for the whitening lotion was from Davao and Zamboanga.”

Wilson, whose grandmother was an Avon Lady in Liverpool, England, said: “The hydrating new variant is perfect for those who go to the beach this summer and want to slather on something cool after a day spent under the sun.”
