“I’m a girl who can do anything. I don’t believe in limitations, and I open my own doors even when they’re slamming on my face,” radio DJ and host Karen Bordador says with conviction.

 

Refusing to surrender to stereotypes, she knows she can reinvent herself if she wants to. Despite the odds, she conditions herself to feel limitless and have a positive and dynamic outlook.

 

She is always thinking of what she can do to make things better for herself and for people around her.

 

As the new amBADASSador of Folded and Hung, she defines being “badass” as “having a crazy, busy schedule and juggling all kinds of jobs, yet still looking like you’re ready for the runway.”

 

This tough chick never takes herself for granted, especially in fashion, beauty and health. “A girl has got it going when she’s the boss,” Karen says. And it looks like she never has to work a day with her wonderful lifestyle.

 

More mysterious

 

When she was younger, Karen admits to liking overly colored outfits and tight-fitting short dresses. But now, her style has evolved into neutral colors and loose, long dresses. “As years go by, the more covered I want to be. I think that makes it more mysterious and appealing to the eyes,” she says.

 

With everything that Karen does, comfort is a must. Her favorite getup is gray skinny jeans with black leather detailing at the bottom. “You’ll look extremely cool wearing it,” Karen points out.

 

“I’ve always been so shy when I was a kid and I’d hide behind everyone else,” she admits. Eventually Karen decided to challenge herself and confront her fears.

 

Getting lost in the songs

 

Playing with the idea of becoming a radio DJ, she got a call from Metro Manila FM station RX 93.1 to audition for its female DJ search. Karen wound up as the top choice and things fell into place.

 

For her, the best part of being a radio DJ is getting lost in the songs and influencing others while at it.

 

She enjoys EDM, hip hop and R&B. Her listeners call her hits the #KarenPlaylist.

 

Being a DJ on RX 93.1 allows her to go to concerts, stage plays and other live events. “We’re the eyes and ears of the people and we deliver the coolest updates first,” she says.

 

Her tips for aspiring radio DJs are to talk from the heart and to always read: “Be updated with what’s happening in the world, enjoy the songs and have fun.”

 

Although she’s been successful in her endeavors, Karen also dreams of acting in movies and teleserye, creating her own EDM songs, writing a book and gracing fashion magazine covers. “A girl can dream,” she says, laughing. “Dreaming, though, is where it all starts.”

 

Karen opens up about her private life in ABS-CBN’s newest realiserye, “I Do.”

 

She has also become an entrepreneur, created an online female community, Sister Secrets (www.SisterSecrets.com.ph). “I’d love to have more

sisters on the site and I hope to share more secrets with them,” she says.

 

In her downtime, Karen enjoys doing girly things, including discovering spas and nail salons. “I am addicted to massages,” she says.

 

To stay in shape, Karen says that, apart from hitting the gym, drinking tea every night has phenomenal effects on her body. “It’s like you didn’t eat anything fattening the day before,” she says.
