Leonor Kilayko to Germany

During her 17-year stay in Cologne, Germany, international concert pianist Leonor Kilayko developed a  devotion to the Servant of God Father Joseph Kentenich, who founded the Schoenstatt Movement which focuses on the devotion to the Mother Admirable Queen  Mother of Schoenstatt.

The feast day of Father Kentenich is Sept. 15, feast of Our Lady of Sorrows.  Leonor would always visit his tomb in Vlademar  taking the train from Cologne, if she happens to be in Germany.   When she leaves this month, she will make sure to visit the tomb.

Nostalgia trip

Leonor’s trip in September  to her favorite country, Germany, will be a ” nostalgia trip” as she visits the places of   her fave composers: (Bonn) L.V. Beethoven;  (Leipzig)  J.  S. Bach;  Bonn—birth  place  in  Zwickau   of Robert  Schumann’s  wife Clara, while Schumann’s burial place is in Bonn  in Endenich.

As always the case, Kilayko makes  it a point to visit Beethooven’s birth house in Bonn, now turned into a  museum and concert hall—on Bonngasse.  She will also go to  the sanitarium where Schumann  spent his last days.  It  is now the R.S. library where concerts also take place.

An all-Beethooven solo

Leonor, who  took graduate studies in   Cologne at the  State Academy for  Music, has imbibed  German  music  like others in these shores.  In fact, in her Beethooven  solo, a critic wrote in the “Bonner Rundschau ” : “Hearing Leonor Kilayko  interpret Beethooven’s works, one could feel the composer in our midst.”

In Manila,  Leonor accompanied baritone-turned-Hollywood-actor  Zheng Zhou  years ago.   Leonor will be the solo performer  during the Philippine-German month in February 2012 in “Paco Park Presents.”

Remembering Jade Vine

Maribel Carag Dario, who used to work with the late Press  Secretary Cerge Remonde in Malacañang, remembers Jade Vine Restaurant as the place to go to in the ’70s. She would go there with good friend Edith Oliveros.  The president of Jade Vine then  was the late Alma Belardo  under whom Bert Torrijos worked as catering supervisor.

Bert remembers particularly Aurora Dizon Garcia (who turned 90 on Aug. 30) who asked Jade Vine to cater to all her parties.  She is the wife  the late former chief of staff  Gen. Eduardo Garcia,  who decided to remain living in their old bungalow in San Francisco del Monte.

Then, there was  the late Vice President Doy Laurel  who found a relative in Claro Cuevas Torrijos, the father of Bert Torrijos because he was from Cavite.  Bert remembers Celia Diaz Laurel,  whose son Cocoy used to call him “uncle,” when Jade Vine would go to their house along Shaw Boulevard to cater.  All this remembering gives us comforting thoughts as Jade Vine prepares for the 51st anniversary with “The Spirit of ’67” band playing the night of Sept. 17, Saturday.  Text  0917-8538731.
