Go off, chaotic king—Noah Schnapp comes out via TikTok lip-sync

Noah Schnapp, who plays the reticent and artistic Will Byers from “Stranger Things,” came out as gay today via TikTok.

“When I finally told my friends and family I was gay after being scared in the closet for 18 years and all they said was ‘we know,’” Schnapp posted in a video of him lip-syncing to an audio saying, “You know what it never was? That serious. It was never that serious. Quite frankly, will never be that serious.”

Fans know the 18-year-old Schnapp for his chaotic energy—take this Buzzfeed list of his chaotic moments, this 2.4 million views YouTube compilation (not to be confused with the other “Noah Schnapp being chaotic” compilations, of which there are many), or maybe the fact that he had beef with Doja Cat as proof—so it’s certainly very in character for him to come out this way.

The caption to the TikTok reads, “I guess I’m more similar to Will than I thought.”

Schnapp confirmed last year after the debut of the show’s fourth season finale that his character was gay and was in love with the protagonist (and Will’s best friend) Mike Wheeler, played by Finn Wolfhard.

“Obviously, it was hinted at in season one: It was always kind of there, but you never really knew, is it just him growing up slower than his friends? Now that he’s gotten older, they made it a very real, obvious thing. Now it’s 100% clear that he is gay and he does love Mike,” he said to Variety.

Will’s sexuality had long been a cause of speculation by fans, dating all the way back to season one. It prompted the popular ship Byler, a portmanteau of Will and Mike’s names.

In the same interview, while talking about the Doja Cat situation, Schnapp also acknowledged his unique public persona. “Yeah, I mean, look, I’m super unserious on social media and pretty goofy.”
