Welcome, June! My midyear resolution is to play more golf with my hubby, Dennis, who often complains that we hardly spend time together. Playing a round with him also gives me a chance to plan our 20th happening at the end of this month.

I’m all excited about golf again, thanks to my new, advanced TaylorMade golf set. This outstanding set includes the newly launched Jetspeed driver, 3-wood, 5-wood and rescue clubs. I’m told these newfangled sticks have something called speed pocket technology, which will give me “great distance.”

I also have new TaylorMade RBZ irons that give a softer feel and a high launch angle for me to “attack the pin.”

Naturally, such terms are foreign to me, as my biggest golf issues usually have to do with which hat to wear or which sunblock is most effective. When Dennis and I walk the course, scoring is hardly the issue.

I got to play a competitive tournament recently though, the 1st Golf Tournament at the Sta. Elena Golf Club. Aviva Pacific Golf Corp. is the distributor of Adidas and TaylorMade golf apparel and shoes.

Highlight

Perfect weather prevailed during the tourney. Aviva’s top brass were in full force, from CEO Sherwin Hing, COO Jesus “Chucho” Martinez III and sales director Simon Sim.

My tournament highlight was getting in the same flight as 6-handicapper Derek Ramsay. It turned out that, in addition to being a national heartthrob and a media star, he also plays amazing golf. OK, Derek, is there anything you can’t do?

He is also one of Aviva’s brand ambassadors, along with John Estrada, Andi Manzano-Reyes, Mika Lagdameo-Martinez, and, believe it or not, yours truly.

Running buddy Bea Locsin and good friend, San Vicente, Palawan, Mayor Pie Alvarez, were delighted with their round.

I also spotted notable VIPs including Mike Toledo, Kenneth Hing, GP Reyes, Anthony Suntay, Mike Besa, Hubert Lim and Daniel Go, Vic Sotto, Anjo Yllana, Ian Dy, Henry Nguyen, Sid Garcia and Hannah See.

The exciting young pro golfer, Jayvie Agojo, showed us all how to properly play the game.

Tournament sponsor Heliocare was available that morning for the golfers’ sun protection. Heliocare Philippines owner Nikki Tang told me the brand has excellent UV-protection and skin essentials.

The tournament was successfully held through the enthusiastic support of presenter PLDT Home Fibr and partners that included QBE Insurance, Jewelmer, Autohub (Rolls Royce), Autostrada (Ferrari), Credit Suisse, Omega, PLDT, Airbus, Maincoat, Platinum Group Metals, Altawitawi Nickel, Carrascal Nickel, Impact Golf and Business Mirror.

The awarding ceremonies were also a load of fun, hosted by the lovely Bianca Valerio and dashing Rovilson Fernandez.

A splendid performance by Bea Tantoco and The Sauce delighted the golfers and guests. With the success of this year’s event, the organizers are already looking forward to the 2nd Golf Tournament next year.

All-out retro party

I missed some parts of the program, though, as I had to catch the gala night of Resort World Manila’s (RWM) “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.” The hilariously entertaining production is now playing at RWM’s Newport Performing Arts Theater.

RWM, the country’s premier lifestyle hub, chose a daring production for its fifth major show. Headliners Leo Tavarro Valdez as Mitzi, Red Concepcion as Felicia and Jon Santos as Bernadette shook their groove thing to rave reviews from theater fans, who flocked to the integrated resort to witness the local staging of this Tony Award-winning musical.

ROSAN Cruz, Tessa Prieto-Valdes, Lara Parpan

The production featured an all-Filipino lineup of stage luminaries such as Bituin Escalante, Lani Ligot, Timmy Canlas, Michael Stuart Williams, Pinky Marquez, and the First Lady of Philippine musical theater, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo.

Directed by Jaime del Mundo, “Priscilla” offers an all-out retro party complete with fabulous costumes, over-the-top headdresses, and a parade of dance-floor favorites including “It’s Raining Men,” “Finally,” “I Love the Night Life,” “Color My World,” “Shake Your Groove Thing” and “I Will Survive.”

The after-gala party was celebrated at The Plaza in Newport Mall. My fun buddies Rosan Cruz, Lara Parpan and Pinky Amador were all dressed in Afros and disco outfits and thoroughly enjoyed the after-party with the cast.

Happy Skin

Summer is still not over, so we really need to keep our skin healthy with beauty products that have skin protectors.

Happy Skin, launched a few months ago, is perfect for Filipino women’s skin. At the recent launch of Happy Skin’s 2014 Summer Collection, top lifestyle editors and key personalities got the chance to revive their love for the beauty brand all over again as Happy Skin owners Rissa Mananquil-Trillo and Jacqe Yuengtian-Gutierrez excitedly introduced the limited-edition Summer 2014 Collection, along with new products that will keep the Filipino woman’s skin happy.

Rissa and Jacqe proudly explained the newest additions to their line of well-loved products and introduced Happy Skin’s partner developers from Japan, Etsuko Kosuge and Satoshi Horiochi, who shared the latest beauty trends from their country, as well as insights about special skincare ingredients in makeup.

Guests got to know more about each product with the help of beauty experts, including dermatologist Dr. Anna Palabyab-Rufino for “Bare Naked Beach,” which featured the new Happy Skin Make A Clean Sweep Revitalizing Micellar Water Makeup Cleanser; Lourd Ramos for “Contour Cove,” which featured the new Happy Skin Feeling Sculptacular Face Contour Kit; and Maggie Wilson-Consunji for “Eyeland of Beauty.”
