Television commercials and indie films are two disparate worlds, yet Paul Soriano manages to do both effortlessly. It might be because the 32-year-old son of commercial director Jeric Soriano and grandson of matinee idol Nestor de Villa finds himself in familiar territory.

His work has not gone unnoticed with his indie film “Thelma.” A film he produced, “Transit,” bagged seven awards, including best film at the 9th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival held on Aug. 4.

While he has stood in front of the camera a few times for endorsements, Paul still prefers a life behind it, putting up his own film company, TEN17P, where he pushes the boundaries of filmmaking.

In his free time, the US native enjoys playing golf. “It’s my creative place,” he says. In spite of his apprehensions, Backstage Pass puts the spotlight on Paul as we discover his top picks for grooming.

I believe that films should… simply tell a story.

Growing up, I wanted to be… two things: a professional golfer and a filmmaker. I’m very happy and blessed that I’m living one of those dreams today.

A perfect day always includes these three things… watching movies, playing golf and being with Celestine.

I am most engrossed when I’m shooting… a TV commercial, music video, short film or a feature film because all I ever want to do is be behind the camera.

What I love most about indie films is… that the director is given the freedom and opportunity to tell the story exactly the way he sees and feels it.

The one film that has influenced me a lot is… “E.T.” It made me believe in UFOs and it opened up my mind. After watching that film, I started to dream and imagine everything and anything.

The country with the most interesting culture I’ve seen would be… Israel.

One place I can keep going back to is… Los Angeles.

When traveling, I never leave home without… my iPhone.

An item I’ve been loyal to for ages is… my black cap.

Grooming essentials

For long days of taping, my essential is… Pond’s Men Energy Charge facial wash. It makes me feel refreshed all the time.

For scents, I like… Clinique Happy, Banana Republic Classic and 4711.

The only hair stylist who can cut my hair is… Peps Silvestre.

CLINIQUE Happy

Paul is a fan of cool, crisp scents. His choice of refreshing scent with a hint of citrus, Clinique Happy for Men (P2,600, 50-ml; and P3,200, 100-ml) is available at Clinique counters nationwide.

Those with a penchant for perfumes will be happy to know that the first-ever beauty outlet store, Beauty Scents, has opened its doors in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. It carries an extensive selection of premium imported scents from luxury designer brands to retail favorites.

All the top brands are represented like Bulgari, Salvatore Ferragamo, Lanvin, Guerlain and Burberry. You’ll find amazing deals at 30- to 70-percent off, so you can easily afford the bottle you’ve been eyeing.

Paul’s choice products are available at Rustan’s Department Store, and other department stores and supermarkets nationwide.
