These are what you should be wearing now: flared pants, chunky-heel platform sandals, lush suede, fringed accessories, pale lips and winged eye makeup, as the fashion throwback to the 1970s reaches fever pitch this season.
At Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane, which is on its sophomore season in the Philippines, there’s a glam rock quality to this sartorial lookback, surely more disco Studio 54 than hippie Woodstock.
Previewed at its Hong Kong offices shortly after Paris Fashion Week, the Saint Laurent Spring-Summer 2015 RTW collection had lushly beaded pieces—dresses, coats and jackets, shawls—with the feel of couture in them.
Skirts were short, pants tailored, and there was an infatuation with the cleavage. Vintage cherry and star prints brought forth a lot of nostalgia.
Monogram
For handbags, Saint Laurent mined its archives with classic shapes, bearing gold monogram hardware. So while you will be seeing totes with the new and discreet “Saint Laurent” logo, it will be side by side with gold chain monogram bags in quilted leather—in lipstick red, yellow, indigo and green.
The same retro gold hardware YSL monogram can also be found in chain bags in fringed suede material.
The 1970s fringe detail can also be seen in Saint Laurent’s—and almost every other brand’s—bag of the season: the bucket. At Saint Laurent’s, the bucket is called the Emmanuelle, and comes in several variants. There’s the classic black with contrast-color lining (fuchsia or indigo), as well as season updates that include colored suede (red, fuchsia, indigo, leopard print) with fringes, and a multicolor Americana star patchwork on black leather. There are also a few leather pieces and handbags bearing the cherry patterns.
As for shoes, Slimane broke out the chunky-heel platform sandals, some pimped-out with crystals, as well as candy-color updates on the Tributes.
Though they were not seen on the runways, Saint Laurent also has some retro clogs for the season.
For accessories, the brand has skinny, wispy silk crepe de chine and silk georgette neckties.
In the Philippines, Saint Laurent is exclusively available at its first women’s and men’s handbags and shoes boutique in Shangri-La Plaza Mall’s East Wing, through Stores Specialists Inc., a member of the SSI Group.
