Denim is comfortable and versatile, very easy to mix and match. However, sloppy styling can make a denim-anchored outfit come across as too casual.
One way to dress up denim is to capitalize on a thoughtful high-low mix: a chambray shirt and a pencil skirt for the board room, or ripped jeans and a stark silk blouse for night. Another way is to get schooled on au courant denim sensibilities. The huge ’70s revival this season, pioneered by major fashion houses like Gucci and Prada, call for denim with a bolder silhouette (yes to flared and wide-leg floor-sweepers, no to unflattering mom jeans); the right color (retro true blue is all the rage—not too light, not too dark); and reserved distressing (acid wash is too tacky, but frayed hems are just right).
