It was perhaps one of the most rigid and much awaited parts of the Miss Universe pageant amid all the pressure and the stiff competition, but at the backstage, the preliminary competition and national costume show were marked by nothing friendly smiles and positive vibes from the candidates.

Moments before going out to the stage for the performance that will determine if they will make it to the Top 12, the 86 candidates of the 65th Miss Universe pageant in Manila flashed their radiant smiles and flaunted their elegant suits as they applied finishing touches to their game-face looks.

Their scores in the swimsuit and evening gown competitions, including preliminary interviews and fan vote, will determine if they will advance to the Top 12, which will be announced at the start of the coronation event.

The pageant proper will be held on Jan. 30, Monday, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. YG/JE
