The first International Women’s Day (IWD) was observed on March 19, 1911, in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Denmark. The date was officially changed to March 8 two years later and has been celebrated yearly since 1975 by the United Nations. IWD is now a monthlong celebration with a dizzying range of activities and events that celebrate women worldwide. The United Nations organizations have defined IWD as “a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change, and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.”
SM Supermalls devoted the entire month of March to its female shoppers with a series of activities and shopping events for “the woman of today —a woman of all things.” The country’s most popular mall chain wanted to focus the spotlight on the women of today who can be anything they want to be regardless of shape, size or color.
From sale events to popup installations celebrating women, here’s what went down at SM Supermalls this month. All Wednesdays of March were designated as Women’s Wednesday Sale where female shoppers were given discounts on special items.
There were Women’s Specials the entire month, and “We are Women” fairs held every weekend. Female shoppers were treated to styling and beauty makeovers, and flocked to “We are Women” popup events in all SM Supermalls. There was a simultaneous #WeAreWomen Digital Activation held in all the branches that enticed shoppers to post their fab finds and fun shopping experiences on their personal social media accounts.
SM Mega Fashion Hall was the venue for the launch of SM Woman’s Spring/Summer 2019 Collection last March 20 that highlighted fashion pieces to watch out for this summer. Also held at SM Megamall was the Beauty Around the World event last March 22 where female shoppers indulged in beauty sessions, demos and talks. The International Women’s Day Summit 2019 took place at SM Aura’s Samsung Hall last March 8 that featured renowned speakers and personalities who shared their take on women empowerment and equality.
At SM Supermalls, women were cheered on, feted and celebrated as they should be.
