ASK A DERMA: How can antioxidants help me achieve better skin? | Lifestyle.INQ

OCTOBER 27, 2022

Skincare isn’t just limited to the facial washes we use, the serums we massage in, and the moisturizers we apply. There is something to be said about getting the right skincare supplements so that you can take care of your skin from the inside.

Astaxanthin is one of the newest skin supplements you’d want to consider. It’s cited to have four main benefits. First, it is a super recharger as it is more potent than other antioxidants. Second, it acts as a natural and additional sunscreen. Third, it is a complexion booster because astaxanthin can improve dermal wrinkles caused by the degeneration of elastic fibers and the collagen network. Fourth, and lastly, astaxanthin helps improves skin elasticity and enhances the moisture content of the skin.

If you’re looking into this, Myra Ultimate is a supplement that has astaxanthin as its main ingredient. It is the leading, safest, and easiest way you can incorporate the antioxidant into your routine. Something to ask your doctor about when you want to achieve more beautiful skin.

In the meantime, I asked dermatologist Dr.  Winlove P. Mojica, FPDS, FPSVI. He gave some insight when it comes to astaxanthin and antioxidants.

What are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are substances that neutralize free radicals produced during the daily functions of our body. Free radicals are substances associated with the development of diseases such as heart disease and cancer. Antioxidants can be viewed as part of the house-keeping team of the body, helping to keep our body healthy.

What is astaxanthin? How crucial is its role and what does it do for us?

Astaxanthin is a carotenoid that has a reddish-pink color. Humans do not produce astaxanthin but this pigment is present in algae, plants, and some animals such as shellfish. We can take it from our diet. Astaxanthin is an antioxidant like Vitamin C and E. It helps reduce free radicals in our body. As a result, it helps reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and keeps the skin looking youthful.

We are also interested in products containing lycopene, and Vitamin E. Can you tell us more about these two ingredients?

Lycopene and Vitamin E are also antioxidants. Lycopene is found in plants usually with red color such as tomatoes. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that can be derived from nuts, leafy green vegetables, and vegetable oils. Both lycopene and Vitamin E are not produced by the human body. Lycopene helps in reducing the size of your pores while Vitamin E helps in reducing UV damage to the skin.

Like astaxanthin, they are taken in as part of our diet.

Would you recommend antioxidants to achieve younger-looking skin?

Yes. Combined with regular exercise and a well-balanced diet.
