Can’t go to the dentist yet? The answer is to #SaySafe | Lifestyle.INQ

OCTOBER 27, 2022

Most of us have not been able to go for checkups during the lockdown.  For sure, it will be a while until we’re confident enough to visit our dentists.  Although dental care isn’t as urgent as going to the ER, Oral health is still health, and should be taken care of especially in times like these.

Stress eating is common during these trying times, how many, for example, have sought comfort in sugary foods and alcohol this pandemic?  These small behavioral changes, done repeatedly, lead to poor dental health during the lockdown.  And who wants to be stuck at home with a toothache?  Nobody.

With all the time we spend at home, why not take this chance to raise our dental care game?  The key is to cover all the bases and #SaySafe.   Thankfully, Colgate has a complete range of products focused on antibacterial care that give you the best oral care protection at every step of your dental care routine.

First is to change your toothbrush regularly, every 3 months to be exact!  It doesn’t matter if your toothbrush still “looks like new”, an old toothbrush can breed harmful oral bacteria and germs in the bristles.   So if you’ve had the flu, it’s best to change your toothbrush immediately after you recover to lessen the possibility of getting reinfected.   Using an old toothbrush also means weaker bristles and may be ineffective in cleaning away mouth bacteria. Colgate has a variety of toothbrushes to choose from, each addressing various tooth and gum conditions.  So pick one that best suits your needs.

Next is to choose a toothpaste that has antibacterial properties, like Colgate Total to help reduce bacteria on your teeth, tongue, cheeks and gums with 4 weeks continuous use. This “best” toothpaste gives a superior protection vs regular fluoride toothpaste — and that makes a difference! An important tip to remember is use the right amount of toothpaste: tip-to-tip on the toothbrush head for adults, and a pea size for kids.

And finally, to make sure you don’t miss a spot, add a bacteria-fighting mouthwash like Colgate Plax, which instantly kills over 99% of bacteria on your mouth after use.  Bacteria in the mouth can reproduce in a matter of minutes in moist and dark areas, such as yes, your mouth (proof of this is having morning breath).  An antibacterial mouthwash used after brushing will also help you control bad breath for 24 hours if used twice daily and can also reduce bacteria growth while providing 12-hour protection against plaque — yes, even behind the mask!

Oral and physical health go hand-in-hand, it may be awhile before things get back to normal but now is not the time to ignore dental hygiene.   It’s important to #SaySafe and be extra vigilant with dental health now more than ever.
