Looking for an energy booster or a quick snack in the middle of the day is something we can’t avoid.

It’s easy to curb our appetite with a cup of milk tea or even bread with our favorite chocolate spread. Especially in times of stress, it’s tempting to eat that slice of cake in the fridge or run to junk food to fill our stomachs. But as irresistible as sugar is, it’s been proven time and again to be detrimental to our health.

According to researchers who crunched data from 31 studies, sugary foods and drinks do not improve mood or fatigue but instead they actually increase your energy slump. The researchers observed this within different time frames after meals, which include the first half hour, and concluded that sugar doesn’t improve mood or alertness.

In fact, researchers found that carbohydrates in general do not offer benefits on any aspect of your mood. Consuming sugar in general lowers alertness and increases fatigue within 60 and 30 minutes respectively.

An alternative energy boost

Instead of depending on sugar to energize you throughout the day, take quick walks, drink enough water, eat a good breakfast or exercise regularly.

According to Robert Gotlin, DO, a specialist in sports medicine, a regular exercise routine boosts overall mood and fitness, which contribute to health and performance. Working out and moving your body regularly could significantly contribute to your energy levels throughout the day.

Note that it’s still important to load up on carbohydrates for fuel and recovery, especially if you engage in sports for long periods. It’s only when you munch and depend on sugar to give you energy that can be detrimental to your health.
