The Embassy of Egypt hosted a celebration in honor of the 70th Egyptian National Day, headed by Egypt Ambassador Ahmed Shehabeldin.
The ambassador, in his speech, explained the importance of education and ethics to both Egyptians and Filipinos. He called first lady Liza Araneta-Marcos’ presence “a great honor.” He concluded his speech joyously, stating that he had experienced “unbelievably kind treatment by every single Filipino” upon his arrival. To cap the night, the child beneficiaries of the St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Foundation gave a performance for the guests.
The Egyptian National Day celebrates the 1952 revolution, which eventually culminated in the abdication of King Farouk. The revolution came about as a result of a military coup d’etat, after which Egypt began its transition from a kingdom into a republic. The event is celebrated annually with military parades, televised concerts and parties, held by Egyptians as a show of national pride and freedom. —CONTRIBUTED
