We’ve reached peak cyberpunk with VR anime

OCTOBER 27, 2022

What’s more cyberpunk than Elon Musk and Grimes’ beta child? Watching your favorite anime films through virtual reality (VR).

On May 15, Funimation and Bigscreen held their first VR live screening. They also plan to release other big anime titles in virtual reality. With this, they’re pushing the viewing experience of fans further. And what better way to kick start this than choosing“Akira” as its first film?

“We’re making good on our promise to deliver anime across every platform where fans want to be,” says Colin Decker of Funimation. “Virtual reality enables our communities to connect in a meaningful way and we’re excited to be partnering with Bigscreen as we take anime to new places.”

Through Big Screen’s app, anime fans from across the globe can meet up and watch their favorite anime films together. They’re creating a unique experience beyond the Google Hangouts and Zoom parties we’re now accustomed to. Since livestream fatigue is becoming a thing, VR might be the key to make online interaction interesting again.

Sadly, only fans from fans in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the UK can join now. For those blessed with no regional restrictions, you can download Big Screen here. It’s compatible with Valve Index, all SteamVR headsets, HTC Vive, Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift, Oculus Go and Microsoft Windows Mixed Reality headsets.
