An AI doppelganger will likely respond to you the next time you “shoot your shot” at your favorite content creators

There’s magic in somehow catching the eye of your favorite personality. Whether by carrying an intriguing fan sign at their concert or by blindly sending them a DM, it’s an impressive feat getting their attention despite the millions trying the same.

Before becoming the Grammy-winning producer we know and love, Zedd got his break by sending Skrillex a copy of his song on MySpace. Chloe San Jose, girlfriend of two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo reveals the pair first interacted after the former reached out to the athlete via X.

Now, such success stories will likely become even harder to come by as tech giant Meta introduces AI chatbots for Instagram creators.

A creator’s virtual assistant

Using the newly launched AI Studio, creators can build customizable AI characters for a variety of purposes.

“Instagram creators can set up an AI as an extension of themselves that can quickly answer common DM questions and story replies. Whether it’s sharing facts about themselves or linking to their favorite brands and past videos, creator AIs can help creators reach more people and fans get responses faster,” writes Meta.

For better or worse, the AI “doppelganger” can also be customized to mimic the creator’s tone and expression—making it as if they were the ones responding themselves.

Though, transparency wouldn’t be an issue as Meta assures AI responses will be clearly tagged. “Through the professional dashboard in the Instagram app, creators can turn auto-replies on and off, and even decide who their AI replies to.”

Additionally, wrongful representation by AI is inconsequential according to the tech company given the parameters in place that can limit what can and cannot be discussed by the bot. Users themselves can also make their own adjustments.

The future of AI in social media

The technology was introduced to assist large creators with keeping up with the influx of queries from fans and businesses alike. It’s beneficial and efficient—sure, when we’re referring to basic questions and partnership inquiries. But when we’re dealing with a fan who just wants to reach out to their favorite personality—hopefully, creators won’t customize their AI to also deal with such interactions. Time will only tell if this feature will completely remove the human element in fan-to-star interactions on social media.

But the feature isn’t limited to chatbots only.

AI Studio can also be utilized by all Meta users. “You can use a wide variety of prompt templates or start from scratch to make an AI that teaches you how to cook, helps you with your Instagram captions, generates memes to make your friends laugh.”

For now, AI Studio is only available in the US.
