Yikes! A tiger and a cat tested positive for COVID-19 | Lifestyle.INQ

OCTOBER 27, 2022

There are recent reports that a tiger from Bronx Zoo in New York City and a domestic cat from Hong Kong were tested positive for COVID-19. Just when we thought animals are safe from the pandemic, Miss Rona seems to have other plans.

Last Mar. 31, the cat became the third animal reported to have COVID-19, following earlier cases of two dogs testing weak positive or positive from repeated tests. New York Times reported this after its owner was positive with the virus. Authorities assured everyone the cat will be monitored and examined closely.

As for the tiger, she is the first animal to be COVID-19 positive in the United States. The tiger is a four-year-old Malayan tiger named Nadia. Unfortunately, she might have infected her sister Azul, two Amur tigers and three African lions. According to the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Veterinary Services Laboratories, the animals were infected by a COVID-19 positive zoo employee.

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), which manages the zoo, tells everyone that they’re putting measures in place to slow down the virus and protect the other animals. “We tested the cat out of an abundance of caution and will ensure any knowledge we gain about COVID-19 will contribute to the world’s continuing understanding of this novel coronavirus,” says the WCS in a statement. “Though they have experienced some decrease in appetite, the cats at the Bronx Zoo are otherwise doing well under veterinary care and are bright, alert and interactive with their keepers.

Although the virus is spreading to animals, The World Health Organization states that there is no proof that dogs, cats or any animal can transmit COVID-19. The Hong Kong Veterinary Association adds that animals get this disease from their owners or any humans they come in contact with. In short, there are no reason to abandon your pets during the pandemic.

It’s time for pet parents to keep their furry babies in check. Your babies might not transmit the virus, but it’s possible for you to put them in harm’s way. Wash your hands and sanitize always!
