E-tricycles, short for electronic tricycles, have been a fixture in Manila streets ever since former Manila Mayor Erap Estrada launched the E-Vehicle and Assistance Program in 2017, envisioning the city to become an e-tricycle capital.

However, it seems like we’re now seeing the end of the e-trikes. On Jul. 25, current Manila Mayor Isko Moreno announced to reporters that he will be banning these vehicles from roaming around Manila. “We will pull it out because it generates chaos,” Moreno said, adding that around 300 e-trikes will be affected.

According to the Manila Public Information Office, this announcement is concurrent with the MMDA’s decision to reclassify what kind of item these trikes are. “MMDA general manager Jojo Garcia said e-tricycles are classified as “toys” by the national government,” says the post.

This goes along with Moreno’s statement that the national government is still studying the ban of these “toys” around Metro Manila.

It’s a shame that e-trikes will be phased out from our roads considering how eco-friendly they are. We do understand that our roads are already chaotic enough as it is, though. Still, what’s going to replace these e-trikes and will they be sustainable?
